The SDO-SuRS features a fully integrated electric propulsion system (IFEP), an innovative solution for the Italian Navy. It is characterized by redundancy and reliability, allowing the crew to complete assigned missions even in the event of major malfunctions. The dynamic positioning system class 3 (DP 3), combined with azimuthal propulsion pods – instead of traditional propeller units with shafts – and forward-positioned tunnel thrusters, allows to maintain the ship position over the damaged submarine even in adverse weather and sea state conditions.

The IFEP incorporates six Wärtsila 8L26 diesel generators, each rated at 2.5 MWe, and two energy storage units (ESUs) with 560 kWh lithium batteries (total of 1,120 kWh). These are connected via main electrical panels to the drivers of the two Kongsberg Maritime Elegance 1380 azimuth pods, each rated at 6,000 kW, capable to provide a maximum speed of 17 knots and a range of 5,000 nm at 16 knots.

The two azimuth pods, combined with three Kongsberg Maritime TT 2560 forward tunnel thrusters, each rated at 1.5 MW, ensure the vessel’s excellent manoeuvring capabilities, essential for maintaining its position and ensuring successful underwater operations. These are controlled by the DP3, also supplied by the Norwegian group. By connecting each of the two battery packs to three diesel generators (positioned together in the same compartment) and a forward thruster each, the DP3 system is able to maintain its position even in the event of a malfunction of one of the two propulsion and manoeuvring sets in strong winds and rough seas. For further redundancy and safety, two emergency diesel generators of 500 kW and 400 kW are also available on board, respectively for the platform systems and for underwater operations. Replenishment at Sea (RAS) equipment allows the Italian Navy to operate the SDo-SuRS in the “Wider Mediterranean” theatre of operations and contribute to international task forces or emergency distress operations
